Day 1: Hanoi - Mai Chau. 180km 7h ride (Sealed road and off-road options)
We start from the outskirts of Ha Noi, ride alongside of the river on the dyke road, before reaching the new Ho Chi Minh highway. After 40km on back road with beautiful landscape of limestone mountains through the peaceful villages, we got to Hoa Binh City. There is an option within 10km off-road. The first 100m will be really a challenging for the first day as it is quite steep and bumpy. After lunch, we continue our ride in the mountainous area, on the side of Black River Reservoir. Before arriving in Mai Chau, we stop at the viewpoint on top of Thung Khe pass that gives you the view of Mai Chau town. Check in the home-stay with some cold beer, and dinner with some delicious local food.
Day 2: Mai Chau - Phu Yen. 160km 5h (Sealed road and off-road options)
In the morning we ride on the historical road No.6 used in the war against the French. This road hasn't been used much for many years and is bumpy and muddy, but there is beautiful scenery. Then we will take another track through H'Mong villages, passing peach and plum orchards. After that, we ride on a nice winding road with amazing scenery.
With the experienced riders, we ride on a small single track through H’Mong tribal village along Laos border. Before getting to Moc Chau, we take a ride in the green tea plantations threaded with narrow trails, Lunch in Moc Chau town, then ride 45km, get a ferry across the Black River hydropower reservoir. Ride along the lake to Phu Yen and overnight at hotel.
Day 3: Phu Yen - Thac Ba lake 140km with some off-road options.
After breakfast, we ride to Lung Lo pass, though the farmland to Yen Bai city for lunch.
In the afternoon, we arrive in Vu Linh, a village of Dao tribes on the side of Thac Ba reservoir. Before checking in to the home-stay, we take a ride through the village to the lake for sunset contemplating. Stay at a traditional stilt house, enjoy beautiful food, have an opportunity for an evening with very friendly and funny people. The home-made rice wine is unlimited.
Day 4: Thac Ba - Xin Man (180km sealed road with some off-road options)
Say goodbye to the host, we take our ride heading North for Xin Man, a small town in a remote area of Ha Giang province.
In the morning, we ride along the lake up to Yen The town, a well-known place for gemstone mining. Take a look for some shops that make beautiful pictures from color stones.
After lunch, we ascend the Gio pass on a very steep and winding road in the very beautiful rainforest. On the other side of the pass, we will see some of the most beautiful rice terraces in Vietnam.
Arrive to the town of Xin Man, overnight and dinner in Gia Long hotel.
Day 5: Xin Man – Ha Giang. 150km sealed road with some off-road options.
First 100km will be on a very long winding road on the side of mountain ranges. We will see some beautiful rice terraces here too, some of the best in Vietnam. Last 50km will be on big smooth road, the Highway No.2 on the side of Lo river. Arrive in Ha Giang city, the gateway to Dong Van Karst Plateau. Obtain permit to visit frontier area in the city. Overnight in a family of Tay tribe in a beautiful village.
Day 6: Ha Giang - Meo Vac 175km 7h ride (Sealed road and off-road options)
Heading up to Dong Van karst plateau, which is recognized as one of Global Geoparks network. People have said, this area is the best in Vietnam because of the spectacular rock mountain scenery and the traditional customs of the local ethnic tribal groups. In the afternoon, we climb up to "the Most Wonderful" Ma Pi Leng pass. Spectacular scenery from another world. We can stop often to take photos. Overnight at hotel.
Dong Van limestone karst plateau was organized by UNESCO as a global geopark in 2010, it shows contrasts in photography, which includes grand massifs, rock plateaus, gigantic caves, rolling valleys and deep canyons. Being Viet Nam's northernmost region, it is also home to 17 ethnic minorities groups, all still keeping alive the legacy of rich tradition and culture for centuries. It is the great combination of geological and cultural heritages that makes this hidden place so worth visiting.
Day 7: Meo Vac - Ba Be national park. 190km 7h ride (Mixed of road and off-road)
Ride down to Bao Lac, get to Lung Phay pass, turn off to small track with some parts of bumpy, muddy, and some chances for river crossing too. There will be some parts of construction after that. Arriving to the area of Ba Be National Park. Ba Be lake, the biggest natural lake in Vietnam in the heart of National park, surrounded by primary jungle and limestone cliffs. Beautiful ride in very thick jungle. Check in to the home stay, stilt house by the side of the lake. Enjoy the evening with nature.
Day 8: Ba Be - Ha Noi. 220km 7h.
Say goodbye to the host, we start our last journey. Small winding empty road before getting into National road No3. Getting more and more traffic till we arrive back to Hanoi.
